CHENNAI: Swami Nithyananda may have had a dedicated following, but he was not the frenzy-causing godman until one night when he allegedly allowed himself to be distracted from the TV set by an actress and the footage of what happened subsequently was beamed to millions of homes in south India.
Within two days of people watching the spycam clip, Nithyananda has become one of the most popular men on the internet — he's the sixth most tweeted-about subject globally and leading the most-searched items' list on Google.
"Swamigal by day, Swami+Gal by night," said one twitterer. Another tweet had an online link, "Swami Nithyananda supposedly has sexcaped to Haridwar. Does he need help with accommodation?" and you clicked on the link only to be taken to websites of hotels in Haridwar. A visitor on Swami Nithyananda's Facebook page left a comment, "Having sex with someone in a closed bedroom is not wrong but not right to call himself jeevanmuktha and then resorting to such acts is definitely a disgrace."
The swami, who has an ashram, Dhyanapeetam, and is also the founder of Life Bliss Foundation in Los Angeles, has followers across the world. He has also developed a diverse range of meditation programmes taught at his centres. The release of the sex tape allegedly involving the godman has all the ingredients to capture the attention of audiences worldwide — religion, sex and a dose of cine glamour — and has thus been a subject of debate, triggering heated arguments on social networking sites.
